Service Description

We are partnering up with Kadence Raku to bring our community a Halloween Raku firing event that will add a touch of spooky magic to your fall season! Kadence Raku is hosting a firing on October 26th from 5:00-8:00pm. Kilnfolk is hosting a hand building class where you can create a piece for the Raku glaze firing on the morning of October 12th from 10:00-11:30am. You must be available for the class date as well as the October firing date if you wish to fire your piece. This experience is open to all skill levels who want to experience the Raku process. The handbuilding portion will be a 1.5-hour instructor-led class where you can create a ceramic ghost or another spooky piece of your choosing. After class, we will bisque fire your piece at the studio and then bring it to the firing later in the month. We'll provide the Raku clay for the class, glaze, safety gear, and everything needed to Raku fire! Not familiar with Raku? Here's a quick run down: This type of ceramic firing is an extremely unique and exciting experience. Unlike the traditional kiln firing process, Raku pottery is glazed with special Raku glazes, then taken straight from the kiln while it's still glowing red hot. The piece is then placed into a container filled with combustible materials (sawdust, horse hair, newspaper, straw, leaves, etc.). These materials burn and create an environment in which the smoke interacts with the glazes, creating unpredictable effects and patterns on the piece, often with crackled textures and shine. The piece is then removed from the soot and washed in water. The final result? A stunning one-of-a-kind piece unlike any other!
